Religious violence in Egypt; shortages in Libya; Bahrain's king fast tracks end to martial-law; oppression in Syria

------

EGYPT

Hundreds of Christians and Muslims hurl stones at each other in downtown Cairo, hours after Muslim mobs set fire to a church and a Christian-owned apartment building in a frenzy of violence that kills 12 people and injures more than 200. The deepening religious violence in military-ruled Egypt is exacerbating the lawlessness and disorder of the country's bumpy transition to democracy after three decades of autocratic rule under former President Hosni Mubarak. Muslim youths attack a large crowd of Coptic Christian protesters marching to the state television building overlooking the Nile. TV images show both sides furiously throwing stones, including one Christian who was holding a large wooden cross in one hand while flinging rocks with the other.

------

SYRIA

Gunfire and shelling rattles a city in central Syria, killing a 12-year-old boy, as President Bashar Assad's harsh regime expands its crackdown on a seven-week uprising by sending tanks and reinforcements to key areas. Authorities arrest a 10-year-old boy, apparently to punish his parents, and file charges against a leading opposition figure who is suffering from cancer. The continued crackdown suggests that Assad's regime is determined to end the uprising by force and intimidation.

Subway now has more restaurants worldwide than McDonald's.

The sandwich chain surpassed the world's largest hamburger chain in terms of number of stores in the U.S. in 2002 and now it has taken the global lead.

Subway had 33,749 restaurants worldwide at the end of last year, according to the company. McDonald's Corp. had 32,737, according a regulatory filing.

"We've been on a great run," said Tony Pace, chief marketing officer of Subway's Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust, the franchisees organization under the company's umbrella.

Subway is entirely franchisee-owned. That has been part of its success, Pace said. Its smaller-format stores cost less to open and operate than other chain restaurants. The company's emphasis on cost-control, marketing and advertising has also helped grow the brand.

Subway, like many restaurant chains, is making a major push in international markets.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates says any military action in Libya must be carefully weighed because it will have broad consequences on the region and the U.S. military, including the effort in Afghanistan.

Gates says he ordered two ships into the Mediterranean, including the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge. And he is sending 400 Marines to the Kearsarge to replace some of the troops that left the ship recently to go to Afghanistan.

Military leaders are saying that putting a no-fly zone in place over Libya is a complex task, that would require taking out that country's air defenses.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Libya is at risk of collapsing into a "protracted civil war" amid increasingly violent clashes between government forces and those opposed to leader Moammar Gadhafi, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warned Tuesday.

"In the years ahead, Libya could become a peaceful democracy, or it could face protracted civil war," she told the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Roll won acclaim for a career as a respected jurist and leader who had pushed to beef up the court's strained bench to handle a growing number of border crime-related cases. Roll was appointed to the federal bench in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush. He previously served as a state trial judge and as a judge on the midlevel Arizona Court of appeals, and as a county and state prosecutor. Bishop Gerald Kicanas of the Roman Catholic Church's Tucson Diocese said Roll was an active parishioner. "He lived his faith as a servant of our nation for the cause of justice," Kicanas said.
Traders turn to the precious metal as a hedge against expected inflation in 2011

Gold prices surged above $1,400 an ounce Tuesday as a weaker dollar pushed investors into the safe haven of precious metals.

Gold also seems to be gaining value based on its own track record for 2010, when global economic instability made it the go-to investment for jittery traders.

"Still looking for ONE good reason for" the price increase, analyst Jon Nadler wrote in a note to clients Tuesday. "No trader can own up to one."

Nadler, a senior analyst with Kitco Metals Inc., said gold's upward momentum seems to be one of the key drivers in its continued rise, creating a kind of casino-like environment where traders snap up contracts in anticipation that others will as well.

"In so many words, it is rising because it HAS risen already. Stack the chips," Nadler wrote.

Still, there are fundamentals supporting gold's rise, said George Gero, senior vice president for RBC Wealth Management. Precious metals are a classic hedge against inflation. Traders are speculating that more central banks will take action to stimulate their economies in 2011, which could lead to inflation and make gold even more attractive than it is now.

The online website WikiLeaks on Sunday blamed the temporary outage of its site on a denial-of-service attack by unknown hackers trying to prevent its release of hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. State Department documents.

WikiLeaks said on Twitter early Sunday that its website was "under a mass distributed denial of service attack" but promised that Spain's El Pais, France's Le Monde, Germany's Der Spiegel, Britain's Guardian newspaper and The New York Times "will publish many US embassy cables tonight, even if WikiLeaks goes down." WikiLeaks had given the media outlets prior access to the diplomatic cables to publish in conjunction with their Sunday release on its site.

There was no reason to doubt WikiLeaks' claim; the website was inaccessible for much of Sunday, though several hundred cables were posted on its site by late afternoon. The cables, many of them classified, offer candid, sometimes unflattering assessments of foreign leaders, ranging from U.S. allies such as Germany and Italy to other nations like Libya, Iran and Afghanistan.

"Glee," the spunky TV musical comedy about high school misfits and the teachers who shepherd them, was a top Emmy nominee Thursday with 19 bids, including for best comedy series and stars Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele.

The leading nominee was the gritty, unsparing World War II drama, "The Pacific," with 24 nominations.

Conan O'Brien is gone from "The Tonight Show" but his short tenure as host is not forgotten: The late-night show with him at the helm nabbed a nomination as best variety, music or comedy series, while resurrected Jay Leno was snubbed in the category.

David Letterman's "Late Show" also was missing from the nominees, after a season in which the host turned an admission of affairs with female staffers and a blackmail attempt into high broadcast drama.

Out of the running for best comedy series is "Two and Half Men" and its star, Charlie Sheen, who's been charged in a domestic dispute case involving his wife. The show and Sheen have routinely been nominated in past seasons.

Besides "Glee," other newcomers receiving Emmy recognition include "Modern Family," with nods for best comedy series and for five members of its ensemble cast -- although not linchpin Ed O'Neill as the patriarch -- and "The Good Wife," a nominee for best drama and recognition for star Julianna Margulies.

Highlights of the House-Senate compromise bill on overhauling regulations on banks and other financial institutions

Highlights of the House-Senate compromise bill on overhauling regulations on banks and other financial institutions.

--------

OVERSIGHT

A 10-member Financial Services Oversight Council made up of the treasury secretary, Federal Reserve chairman, a presidential appointee with insurance expertise, heads of regulatory agencies and a new consumer protection bureau would monitor financial markets and watch for threats. The council would have wide powers to determine which financial institutions must meet tougher regulations and would have a say in some new consumer financial protection regulations. It also would have the power to break up large financial firms if they pose a grave threat.

--------

CONSUMER PROTECTION

A Consumer Financial Protection Bureau within the Federal Reserve would police lending, taking powers now exercised by various bank regulators. Auto dealers would be exempt from the bureau's rules. Regulators could appeal bureau regulations to the oversight council if they believe they would threaten the banking system. The council could veto the regulations with a two-thirds vote. Federal regulators could override state consumer laws on a case-by-case basis. Currently states have a more difficult time applying their laws to national banks.

Both presidents relieved top generals of their duties, language is similar in tone

Army Gens. Stanley McChrystal and Douglas MacArthur met the same fate -- sacked by their commander in chief. In 1951, President Harry Truman stripped MacArthur of his command after disagreements over Korean War strategy. On Wednesday, President Barack Obama fired McChrystal after his disparaging comments about the president and several members of the administration.

Here is what the presidents said:

------

Obama: "Today I accepted Gen. Stanley McChrystal's resignation as commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. I did so with considerable regret, but also with certainty that it is the right thing for our mission in Afghanistan, for our military and for our country."

------

Truman: "With deep regret I have concluded that General of the Army Douglas MacArthur is unable to give his wholehearted support to the policies of the United States government and of the United Nations in matters pertaining to his official duties."

------

Obama: "The conduct represented in the recently published article does not meet the standard that should be set by a commanding general. It undermines the civilian control of the military that is at the core of our democratic system. And it erodes the trust that's necessary for our team to work together to achieve our objectives in Afghanistan"

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig's statement Thursday on the call that cost Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game:

First, on behalf of Major League Baseball, I congratulate Armando Galarraga on a remarkable pitching performance. All of us who love the game appreciate the historic nature of his effort last night.

The dignity and class of the entire Detroit Tigers organization under such circumstances were truly admirable and embodied good sportsmanship of the highest order. Armando and Detroit manager Jim Leyland are to be commended for their handling of a very difficult situation. I also applaud the courage of umpire Jim Joyce to address this unfortunate situation honestly and directly. Jim's candor illustrates why he has earned the respect of on-field personnel throughout his accomplished career in the Major Leagues since 1989.

The disaster is, so far, the third most expensive cleanup in U.S. history

Federal officials say cleaning up the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has already cost the government $87 million, making it the third-most expensive cleanup effort in the nation's history.

Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry has distributed that money to state and federal agencies directly involved in the cleanup. Those include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which projects the oil slick's trajectory, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which rescues oil-soaked birds.

A senior financial analyst at the National Pollution Funds Center says an additional $38 million in emergency money has been assigned to the Deepwater Horizon spill, but it has yet to be spent.

The most expensive cleanup was the Exxon Valdez spill, which cost $121 million. The second was $89 million for cleaning up a 1994 oil spill off the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The president thinks the Cleveland basketball star should take a look at his Chicago hometown favorites

If LeBron James isn't sure he can win in Cleveland, President Barack Obama thinks there's an opportunity with his hometown Chicago Bulls.

"You know, like I said, I don't want to meddle," Obama told TNT. "I will say this: (Derrick) Rose, Joakim Noah it's a pretty good core. You know, you could see LeBron fitting in pretty well there."

Obama was interviewed about a number of basketball subjects by broadcaster Marv Albert on the White House basketball court. The interview will be shown Tuesday night at 8 p.m. EDT.

James can become a free agent this summer, and his decision whether to leave the Cavaliers is one of the hottest topics in sports. Though he's never said he wants out of his native Ohio, there's speculation he'd consider it after the Cavaliers were knocked out of the playoffs in the second round by the Boston Celtics.

"I think that the most important thing for LeBron right now is actually to find a structure where he's got a coach that he respects and is working hard with teammates who care about him and if that's in Cleveland, then he should stay in Cleveland," Obama said. "If he doesn't feel like he can get it there, then someplace else."

Here is the text of Attorney General Eric Holder's announcement Tuesday of the arrest of Faisal Shahzad in the attempted car bombing in Times Square:

----

Earlier this evening, Faisal Shahzad was arrested in connection with the attempted car bombing in New York on Saturday. Mr. Shahzad, an American citizen, was taken into custody at JFK Airport in New York as he attempted to board a flight to Dubai.

Since this plot was first uncovered on Saturday night, the FBI, prosecutors and intelligence lawyers in the National Security Division of the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorneys Offices in Manhattan and Connecticut, along with the NYPD have worked night and day to find out who was responsible for what would have been a deadly attack had it been successful. Over the course of the day today, we have gathered significant additional evidence that led to tonights arrest, which was made by agents from Department of Homeland Securitys Customs and Border Protection.

This investigation is ongoing, as are our attempts to gather useful intelligence, and we continue to pursue a number of leads. But its clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans.

Shareholders fear a criminal investigation by the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan

Shares of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. tumbled Friday on concern that the government is launching a criminal investigation into some of the New York investment bank's mortgage securities deals.

The worries hurt financial services industry shares. The Standard & Poors Financials sector index dropped about 2 percent in early afternoon trading, logging the worst performance of the 10 S&P industry groups.

The investigation by the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan stems from a criminal referral by the Securities and Exchange Commission, a knowledgeable person said Thursday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the inquiry is in a preliminary phase.

Standard & Poor's Equity Research analyst Matthew Albrecht, on Friday, cut his investment recommendation on Goldman shares to "Sell" from "Hold" and lowered his price target price by $40 to $140. The shares have fallen more than 20 percent since the SEC said it was charging Goldman.

"Though traditionally difficult to prove, we think the risk of a formal securities fraud charge, on top of the SEC fraud charge and pending legislation to reshape the financial industry, further muddies Goldman's outlook," Albrecht wrote.
