Fall premiere

Roswell (9 p.m., WB) is a sci-fi drama crossed with a giddy teen romance. The captivating pilot episode, written by creator Jason Katims ("My So-Called Life," "Relativity"), introduces Liz Parker (newcomer Shiri Appleby), a small-town girl from the weirdest small town in America -- Roswell, N.M. After a brush with death, she learns that Max Evans (Jason Behr), the cute, shy classmate she's admired from afar, is really an extraterrestrial with ties to the alleged 1947 crash-landing in Roswell of an alien spacecraft. "Roswell" is based on Melinda Metz's "Roswell High" novels for teenagers; it's co-produced by David Nutter ("The X-Files") and Jonathan Frakes ("Star Trek: The Next Generation"), two guys who know a lot about sci-fi.
