It's really him

Woodward and Bernstein break their silence: W. Mark Felt is "Deep Throat."

It's official.

After more than three decades of silence, the Washington Post has just confirmed that former FBI official W. Mark Felt was "Deep Throat."

In a statement, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein said: "W. Mark Felt was 'Deep Throat' and helped us immeasurably in our Watergate coverage." They added, however, that "many other sources and officials assisted us and other reporters for the hundreds of stories that were written in the Washington Post about Watergate."

Woodward and Bernstein had vowed to keep the identity of "Deep Throat" secret until his death but reconsidered after Vanity Fair released a story earlier today in which Felt said that he was "the guy they used to call 'Deep Throat.'" Ben Bradlee, the former Post editor who knew the identity of "Deep Throat" all along, told the paper that he was surprised that the man's identity wasn't discovered long ago. "The thing that stuns me is that the goddamn secret has lasted this long," he said.
