A Japanese pop song that borrows its melody from Satie.

There’s been a whole lot of excitement recently about PINE*am (not that it takes all that much to get people excited about cute Japanese girls playing music), but their new record, “Pull the Rabbit Ears,” leaves me unimpressed — think Cibo Matto with twice the bubblegum cuteness and a quarter the talent (although “Rhyme Mine” does develop a cool maze of interlocking blippy synth parts). I’m considerably more taken with “Gymnopedie 0.1” from the band’s earlier EP, a wall-of-sound pop song that borrows its melody from Eric Satie’s horribly overplayed but heart-meltingly lovely “Gymnopedie 1.”
