Some of Deerhoof's ferocity is reined in on their new "The Runners Four" -- you don't get that thrilling feeling that they might explode at any moment -- but some of the cutesiness has been reined in too, and I think there's a net gain. Their surrealist counterpoint is as sharp as ever, everything seems misshapen but fits perfectly in with everything else, the two guitars engage in deadly knife fights with each other, and all is odd and beautiful.
