Daily Download: "Let Me Down Easy," Bettye LaVette

Some classic tracks from soul singer Bettye LaVette

As part of ANTI Records' efforts to spread the word about Bettye LaVette -- they clearly believe, and justifiably, that they have a major but seriously under-recognized artist on their hands -- and her upcoming record, which I wrote about yesterday, they've put a couple of classic tracks from earlier in her career up for free download. All great soul singers push their voices past the smooth and comfortable at times, but LaVette's voice lives closer to the edge than most, and part of the thrill of her singing is in how unflinchingly nervy it is, how willing to be a little bit ugly. "Let Me Down Easy" is particularly astounding, but "You'll Never Change" is also well worth downloading.
