On their latest, "Early 21st Century Blues," the Cowboy Junkies, always a restrained and tactful band, become nearly invisible in their desire to be unobtrusive and ensure that nothing diverts from singer Margot Timmins. Luckily, Timmins is entirely worthy of your undivided attention, and the modesty and anonymity of the mid-tempo folk-rock playing in the background allows her to work the emotional nuances in these songs, mostly covers, with impressive subtlety. One of my favorite tracks is this wistful, hazy blues, in part because Timmins herself seems to be trying to fade into blankness, thus turning the song into a strange and ghostly duet between a restrained guitar and an even more restrained voice.
