Daily Download: "Marlene on the Wall," Suzanne Vega

This live rendition of an old favorite, from the new "Live at the Stephen Talkhouse," is poorly, bizarrely mixed, with the vocals intermittently buried beneath the band, rhythm guitar occasionally inaudible and lead guitar pushily prominent. The band sound is pretty dreadful, almost reconstructing the cheesy '80s folk-pop sound of Vega's first records (and of the original recording of this song), but it's still a marvelous song, one of her best, with an effortless flow that belies its density and wordiness.
