It was way back in November 1970 when reporter Paul Linnman of KATU Channel 2 in Portland, Ore., documented the ill-fated attempt by Oregon highway authorities to dispose of an 8-ton sperm whale (erroneously reported at the time as a gray whale) from the coast near Florence, Ore. The incident has been written about by Dave Barry, and honored by NPR.
