2. "Threats on Kennedy Made Here," Tampa Tribune 11-23-63; "Man Held in Threats to JFK," Miami Herald 11-24-63 -- it is bylined "Tampa (UPI)," so it may well have appeared in other newspapers; and, if so, the fact that it reprints just a few sentences from the Tampa Tribune article may have caused earlier researchers to overlook it.

4. FBI Airtel to Director from Miami, declassified 2-16-83.

5. 1967 CIA Inspector General's Report, p. 91, citing 11-19-63 CIA memo; HSCA 180-10074-10394, cited in JFK Assassination Records Review Board Update presentation by Joseph Backes at the JFK Lancer Conference, November 1996.

26. These are just some of the many pages of transcripts of phone calls the FBI recorded in Tampa: FBI 124-10249-10282, FBI 124-10249-10287, and FBI 124-10249-10295, all declassified 5-17-94. Contrast with FBI Airtel to Director from Miami, declassified 2-16-83.

27. Interview with ex-Secret Service Agent Abraham Bolden 4-15-98.

28. According to an 11-26-63 interview of Miami police informant William Somersett, Milteer said JFK "could have been killed in Miami" -- and this reference to Miami (instead of Tampa) is yet another reason the Tampa attempt stayed secret for so many years. It's not clear if Milteer's use of "Miami" indicates that there was a backup plan to try to kill JFK in Miami -- which would have been difficult, since there was no large, public motorcade -- or if it means that Milteer wasn't fully informed about the city where the November 18th attempt would occur.

29. Rolando Cubela had not been one of "the twelve" in the Sierra Maestra mountains with Fidel Castro, unlike Raul Castro and Che Guevara.
