Daily Download: "Don't Hold Your Breath," Calla

Although Calla got considerably tighter and slicker on this year's "Collisions," there used to be an appealing baldness to their sound, dark and morose but without any attempt at grandeur, as demonstrated on this track from their 2002 split EP with the Walkmen. The music swells to a climax, but there's no attempt to make the morose build to the exultant, as it so often and so misleadingly does in "dark" and "cinematic" rock like Calla's.
