Daily Download: "America's Boy," Broadcast

British band Broadcast, recently pared down to a duo, has always had better sounds than songs, and while this is a pretty good one, with a catchy and typically icy melody, it's the beautifully degraded synthesizer sounds running throughout the song that really make it special. As for the lyrics, if "America's Boy" has a salient political point it's lost on me, but it's a better song for that ambiguity, as vocalist Trish Keenan sings images of what she refers to as "the heroics of American imperialism, the all-out impressiveness of its big achievements" in an unusually neutral tone that is, at the very most, stealthily ironic.
