Senate rejects gay marriage ban

Tally: 49-48 in favor of ending debate.

Breaking: Thanks, no doubt, to the barrage of calls and e-mails from Broadsheet readers, the Senate has voted 49-48 against moving to an actual vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment. 60 yeas were needed to proceed.

So, phew. But still: 49-48 isn't exactly a K.O. blow, and plenty of hate has been successfully mongered in the process. We're not done here. Or even in Massachusetts.
