NPR: Single mother Elvira Arellano has camped out in a Chicago church since Tuesday to avoid deportation. She fears being separated from her 7-year-old son, who was born in the United States and is therefore a U.S. citizen. Also, a blogger takes on media portrayals of Arellano as either an "illegal alien" or "undocumented."

Reuters: One-child policy in China widens gender imbalance. The culprit? Sex-selective abortions, experts say.

Los Angeles Times: 18-year-old Betsy Perez, the first woman in her family to attend college, leaves her home in L.A. for school on the East Coast. Kudos to anyone who can make it through with dry eyes.

BBC: Oh, surveys! Apparently South African women are a bunch of materialistic, fame-seeking egomaniacs.

HuffPo: She's not lovin' it: Happy Meals with toy Hummers rub a HuffPo blogger the wrong way.

San Jose Mercury News: All of the talk in this column about "marrying down" made me wonder how socially acceptable this would be with the genders reversed. It has all the ingredients for a Maxim magazine feature!
