George W. Bush, speaking in Vietnam on what America’s experiences there teach us about the war in Iraq: “It’s just going to take a long period of time for the ideology that is hopeful — and that is an ideology of freedom — to overcome an ideology of hate . . . . We’ll succeed — unless we quit.”

The United States normalized relations with Vietnam in 1995 — approximately two decades after it pulled out all of its troops.
