Song Search: Two New York bands square off

It's a pop vs. pop-punk showdown.

Week 3 winner

Week 3: Despite John Darnielle casting his lot with "Tenochitlan," the Main Drag's "A Jagged Gorgeous Winter" handily won the vote in Week 3, and thereby moves on to compete in the finals, starting Dec. 4. Congratulations to the Main Drag, and good luck in the next round!

Week 4

Week 4 features a classic battle of beauty versus brawn: One song's a gorgeously wistful folk-pop tune; the other's a slab of pump-your-fist punk rock. Remember to check back on Wednesday to find out which song Rickie Lee Jones thinks should be on your Thanksgiving playlist -- and despite the short workweek, you've got until midnight on the 26th to vote.

"Like Castanets," Bishop Allen

Brooklyn's Bishop Allen have been plying the boards of the country's rock clubs for the better part of four years; "Like Castanets" was the September installment of their ambitious plan to record and release a four-song EP for every month of the year.

Music for Robot's Blair thought the song was "sweet, simple sounding pop-stuff on first listen -- the more time I spend with the music the more I enjoy it, though, and the more attention I pay to the layers and layers of instrumentation they're using."

"Every Night's a Bust in NYC," Generals & Majors

Heavily influenced by unrepentant rockers like AC/DC, Guns 'N Roses and Kiss, the New York-based quintet Generals & Majors recorded their debut album just this past summer on a farm in upstate New York.

Tofu Hut felt the band's Song Search entry "gives every indication of being a legit pop-punk one-hit wonder waiting to happen: Nursery rhyme lyrics, screamalong chorus, self-destructive middle-class angst and undeniable catchiness."
