Song of the Day: "To the East," Electrelane

Electrelane serves up something tasty from simple ingredients.

The other day, more out of laziness than anything else, I resigned myself to eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch. The thin white slab sitting on a plate didn't exactly have me salivating, but you know, once I bit into that bad boy, I was pretty effing satisfied. Today's song, by Brighton, England's Electrelane, reminds me of that sandwich. At first listen, "To the East's" elementary drumbeat, thin vocals and standard quiet/loud dynamics seem pretty bland -- rote indie rock, really -- but for whatever reason, the song, from the band's upcoming "No Shouts, No Calls," combines those ingredients in a delightfully fulfilling fashion. So yeah, this Electrelane song is like my lunch.
