59,498

The U.S. government estimates the number of Iraqis killed or injured over the past two years.

38,813: The number of "individuals in Iraq killed, injured, or kidnapped as a result of incidents of terrorism" in 2006, according to statistics from the National Counterterrorism Center released Monday by the State Department.

20,685: The number of "individuals in Iraq killed, injured, or kidnapped as a result of incidents of terrorism" in 2005.

Add them together, and you get 59,498 dead or injured in two years in a country with a population one-tenth that of the United States.

Correction: An earlier version of this post said that the National Counterterrorism Center count showed that 59,498 people were killed in terrorism incidents in Iraq in 2005 and 2006. In fact, the statistics show that 59,498 people were killed or injured.
