Song of the Day: “Wild Mountain Nation,” Blitzen Trapper

Country rock that'd sound right at home on classic-rock radio.

Like Thursday’s song from Utah Carol, Blitzen Trapper’s “Wild Mountain Nation” has deep roots in country music. But rather than use the accouterments of country to turn out a slow, sultry weeper, the Portland, Ore., band uses pedal steels and curling guitars to help kick out the jams. You just know that, back in the day, “Wild Mountain Nation” — with its loose rock beat and Eric Earley’s ragged-but-right vocal — would’ve found a happy home on the radio beside Neil Young and the Allman Brothers Band.
