Song of the Day: "The Underdog," Spoon

The minimalist minds in Spoon add some horns to the mix.

For more than a decade, the Austin, Texas, band Spoon has been making hook-filled, rhythmically obsessed indie rock that's almost minimalist in its precision. So it comes as a bit of a shock to hear a horn section bopping away at the start of "The Underdog," from the band's upcoming "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga." The horns turn out to be something of a feint, though, as the song's real strength lies in its economical use of shakers, hand claps and a catchy, persistent acoustic guitar.
