Report: Thompson is in

The former Tennessee senator is expected to tell supporters this afternoon that he's running.

It may be news, but it's not exactly a surprise: Fred Thompson, who has been running a campaign for president without running a campaign for president for months now, is expected to make it a little more official this afternoon. The Washington Post's Michael Shear says Thompson will tell supporters and party officials that he's in during a conference call at 4 p.m.

An official announcement could come as early as Friday -- just in time for the Labor Day weekend -- and the requisite "Tonight Show" appearance is on the books for next week.
