While most of us are focused on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, "Inside America's Empire" (10 p.m. on PBS, check listings) explores America's military presence around the globe, from Colombia to the Philippines. These smaller-scale missions are aimed at preventing chaos and unrest and keeping terrorism in check. In this installment of the PBS series "America at a Crossroads," reporter and author Robert Kaplan travels to four different areas -- Georgia, Mali, Colombia and the Philippines -- to examine our country's military involvement there. But does it really add up to (gasp) an empire? Kaplan clearly thinks so: "The kinds of deployments we have, what they're doing, where they are -- the only valid historical comparisons are with previous empires from the past." That said, Kaplan's perspective isn't all that skeptical, since he firmly believes that these deployments are the only way to prevent trouble and avoid full-scale wars like the one in Iraq.
