The images of 9/11 are destined to come back and haunt us each year. For those who saw it, one particular photo of a man falling from the World Trade Center stands out as one of the definitive images of the day. "The Falling Man" (premieres at 9 p.m. EDT on Discovery Times Channel) explores the controversy surrounding the photograph, and tells the story of Tom Junod, an Esquire writer who set out to discover who the falling man was. Skim Junod's article and you'll immediately see how seriously he takes a task that plenty of others would consider morbid. Even so, the overall tone of this special is reasonably balanced and it's a little less of a rubbernecker's ball than you might expect, given the subject matter. By focusing on one man, the filmmakers shift an unfathomable catastrophe down to an intimate scale, and the results are just as devastating.

"Sin City Law," an eight-part documentary series by the creators of mesmerizing doc series "The Staircase," tackles the American justice system as it plays out in Las Vegas courtrooms (premieres at 9 p.m. EDT on Sundance; Part 2 is at 10 p.m. EDT). And "The Closer" finishes up its third season at 9 p.m. EDT on TNT.
