Weekend Pick

Since our favorite awards show, "The Golden Globes," has been reduced to a press conference (9 p.m. EST on NBC), the best pick for the weekend has to be "Comanche Moon," CBS's three-part miniseries that begins Sunday night (premieres at 9 p.m. EST). Penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, his writing partner on two novels and the screenplay for "Brokeback Mountain," "Comanche Moon" is the prequel to the 1989 miniseries "Lonesome Dove." Expect high drama, nuanced dialogue and a cast of heavy lifters, from Rachel Griffiths to Val Kilmer, plus Steve Zahn as Gus McCrae (played by Robert Duvall in the original series).

On Friday, a new episode of "Friday Night Lights" (9 p.m. EST on NBC) finds Smash heavily recruited. Howie Mandel plays a cult leader on Friday's episode of "Monk" (9 p.m. EST on USA), "20/20" examines the science of happiness (10 p.m. EST on ABC), and the sixth season of "Real Time With Bill Maher" premieres (11 p.m. EST on HBO). On Saturday, Kings of Leon perform on "Austin City Limits" (9 p.m. EST on PBS, check listings), and National Geographic's "Hunter and Hunted" profiles a rhino attack on two tourists (9 p.m. EST). On Sunday, "Masterpiece Theatre" is now called, simply, "Masterpiece," and its 38th season premieres with Jane Austen's "Persuasion" (9 p.m. EST on PBS, check listings). Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" begins in a flurry of running, dodging and big explosions (premieres at 8 p.m. EST on Fox).
