Weekend Pick

A new episode of "Friday Night Lights" (Friday at 9 p.m. EST on NBC) is well worth your time, but if you have HBO Signature, your top priority should be to catch last year's remarkable and heart-wrenching Oscar-nominated film "Children of Men" (Friday at 9 p.m. EST on HBOS, playing on regular HBO for rest of the month, so check listings here). Based on the bleak futuristic novel by P.D. James and directed by Alfonso Cuarón ("Y Tu Mama Tambien"), the film imagines a world where women are no longer able to get pregnant and the youngest person alive is 18 years old (and a huge celebrity for it). Startling, unpredictable, sweet and brutal, this film will mesmerize you from start to finish. Be sure to turn off the lights and turn up the volume so you can appreciate how beautifully shot and directed it is, from its quiet moments to its action sequences. If "Children of Men" doesn't make you wince, chuckle, gasp and cry before it's over, well, you just might be an alien.

Also…

On Friday, the last new episode of vampire drama "Moonlight" airs at 9 p.m. EST on CBS, while a new episode of "Monk" airs at 9 p.m. EST on USA, and "20/20" focuses on anorexic mothers (10 p.m. EST on ABC). On Saturday, "The Godfather" airs at 8 p.m. EST on A&E, Coldplay perform in a repeat of "Austin City Limits" (9 p.m. EST on PBS, check listings), and Tom Arnold hosts a new episode of the reality series "My Big Redneck Wedding" (9 p.m. EST on CMT). On Sunday, "School of Rock" airs at 8 p.m. EST on TBS, the 11th leg of "The Amazing Race" airs at 8 p.m. EST on CBS, and "Masterpiece" features "Northanger Abbey" by Jane Austen (9 p.m. EST on PBS, check listings).
