Rep. Tom Lantos is dead at 80

The California Democrat had announced earlier this year that he wouldn't run for reelection because he had esophageal cancer.

Rep. Tom Lantos, Congress' only Holocaust survivor, has died, his spokeswoman announced Monday. The California Democrat, who was in his 14th term, was the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. In January, he announced that he would serve out his term but would not run for reelection because he had cancer of the esophagus.
