Our vaccination double standard

Female immigrants -- but not citizens -- are now required to get an HPV vaccination.

In this week's clip for Current TV, I talk about how the controversial HPV vaccine Gardasil is now required for girls and young women hoping to immigrate to the U.S. Immigrant advocates argue that Gardasil is prohibitively expensive -- at $360 for a three-shot regimen, it is one of the most expensive vaccines out there -- and, since it's a sex-specific vaccine, places a greater financial burden on female immigrants. It's also the only vaccine required for U.S. residency that protects against a disease that isn't transmitted by respiratory route.
