California same-sex marriage ban passes

Proponents of a constitutional amendment overturning an earlier state Supreme Court decision succeeded after a hard-fought battle.

California's Proposition 8, which amends the state's Constitution to overturn a previous state Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage, was too close to call earlier Wednesday. Now, it appears to have passed -- among others, the Associated Press has called it for the proposition's backers. With 96 percent of precincts in, the "yes" votes were leading 52.2-47.8.
