It's official: AP calls North Carolina for Obama

Confirming what had seemed evident from the returns, the Associated Press says Barack Obama won the state and its 15 Electoral College votes.

It took a day and a half, but the Associated Press has just called North Carolina and its 15 Electoral College votes for Barack Obama. That brings his total to 364.

No Democrat had won the state since Jimmy Carter did it in 1976; a formerly Democratic state, it shifted Republican along with the rest of the South after the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.
