Arizona lawmakers want Obama to prove citizenship

State reps push a bill that would require the president to show his birth certificate to get on the ballot in 2012

Arizona lawmakers who still aren't convinced President Barack Obama was born in the United States are pushing a bill that would require the president to show his birth certificate to get on the state's 2012 ballot.

Opponents say the bill, passed Wednesday by the House, is casting Arizona in an ugly light and could give the elected secretary of state broad powers to kick a presidential candidate off the ballot.

The measure's sponsor, Republican Rep. Judy Burges of Skull Valley, says she isn't sure if Obama could prove his eligibility for the ballot in Arizona and wants to erase all doubts.

Hawaii officials have repeatedly confirmed Obama is a natural-born American citizen, and his Hawaiian birth certificate has been made public.
