A San Francisco state senator says emergency officials have confirmed that six people were killed in massive fire and explosion.

Sen. Leland Yee says he was briefed Friday morning by the California Emergency Management Agency. California Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado said at a news conference at least four people were killed and more injured.

Thursday night's explosion was heard for miles and shot a fireball more than 1,000 feet in the air and sent frightened residents fleeing for safety and rushing to get belongings out of burning homes. Authorities have said there could be other casualties but the fire and darkness blocked them from checking.
