WIDENING PROBE: A division of the U.S. Treasury Department has expanded a criminal investigation into online mortgage fraud beyond the deceptive ads that had been appearing alongside Google's search results. The probe now covers bogus promises made by swindlers in ads placed on Microsoft's Bing search engine and Yahoo, too.

LATEST ACTION: Regulators said Monday 125 mortgage scams have been closed, up from 85 when it announced the crackdown last week.

FALLOUT SO FAR: Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp., which runs Yahoo Inc.'s search advertising, have banned hundreds of Internet advertisers and agencies tied to the scams.
