NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A man in critical condition after being shot on his birthday by New Jersey police following a meandering, multi-town chase and multiple crashes in a stolen car will face serious charges if he survives.
The man, identified as 38-year-old Corey Bland, was in critical but stable condition Tuesday at University Hospital in Newark.
The state Attorney General's Office says Bland led state troopers and local officers in Newark and Summit on a chase in a car that had been reportedly carjacked at gunpoint.
Authorities say officers fired at him twice. The first time was after he crashed into two police vehicles and then drove toward officers. The second was after he crashed into scaffolding on a building.
Attorney General's spokesman Paul Loriquet says it was unclear how many times the man was hit and how many officers fired.
