MIDLAND, Texas (AP) — A man was detained Saturday after entering an airport in Midland with explosives in military-grade wrapping, an official there said.

City of Midland spokeswoman Tasa Watts said she had no information on the suspect, who was taken into custody by the FBI. An FBI spokesman did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press.

The federal Transportation Security Administration issued a statement saying its officers detected a suspicious item in a carry-on bag during X-ray screening. Law-enforcement officers were notified, and a checkpoint was closed for an hour while the item was removed from the area.

Watts said while the explosives were wrapped in military-grade wrapping, but the specific grade will not be known until the explosives are tested.

A sweep was done and the airport terminal was cleared, and normal operations have resumed, she said.
