TEHRAN,Iran (AP) — The commander of Iran's border guards says Iran is negotiating Pakistan to release three of its border guards held there.

The Tuesday report by the official IRNA news agency quotes Gen. Hossein Zolfaghari as saying the three crossed the border "unintentionally" while chasing drug smugglers. He said Iran asked Pakistan to release them quickly.

The border guards crossed into southwestern Pakistan and killed one the smugglers, Pakistani government official said Monday.

Gen. Zolfaghari said Iranian and Pakistani officials have held a round of talks on the case, and more discussions were set for Tuesday.

The incident occurred Sunday in Baluchistan province, a desolate, sparsely populated region where the border is not clearly marked.
