NEW DELHI (AP) — Hundreds of grieving friends and relatives of an Indian student who was killed in Britain have attended his funeral in western India.

Twenty-three-year-old Anuj Bidve was fatally shot Dec. 26 during a night out in Salford, a city in northern England. A 20-year-old man, Kiaran Stapleton, has been charged with his murder.

The apparently unprovoked shooting shocked people in Britain. There has been speculation that the killing may have had a racial motive.

Bidve's parents traveled to England to bring his body back to his western Indian hometown of Pune, where the funeral was held late Saturday.

The cremation was a simple affair. Relatives had informed reporters that there would no rituals or speeches.
