BREWSTER, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say two people aboard a small plane have been found dead on a Massachusetts beach after the private four-seater crashed.

The National Transportation Safety Board says the plane crashed Sunday after the pilot reported smoke in the cabin. The U.S. Coast Guard says the plane's wreckage was not located, but both agencies say the two bodies were recovered at the beach in Brewster on Cape Cod. Their identities were not released, pending notification of their families.

The Coast Guard initially believed the plane had been found because the beach was scattered with debris.

The plane was flying from Martha's Vineyard to Hyannis, about a 20-minute flight, when it lost contact.

Federal records show the 1961 Piper is owned by a woman and a man from East Falmouth.
