BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A Romanian medical official says 59 people suffered injuries as days of protests against the government and austerity measures turned violent.

Alis Grasu of Bucharest's ambulance services said Monday that 23 people were briefly hospitalized and three are still in the hospital.

More than 1,000 protesters on Sunday clashed with police who used tear gas and flares to repel demonstrators hurling stones and firebombs. It was the fourth day of anti-government protests.

Bucharest mayor Sorin Oprescu says people smashed the windows of shops, banks and bus stations, and that street lights were vandalized.

Anger has mounted in Romania over public wage cuts, slashed benefits, higher taxes and widespread corruption.
