BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A medical official says Romanian ex-president Ion Iliescu is recovering from surgery to remove a polyp on his colon.

Doina Dimulescu, manager of Bucharest's Elias Hospital, says the operation took place Monday and that the 81-year-old is doing well.

Iliescu also was hospitalized last November, suffering from exhaustion.

Iliescu was the first elected president of the country after the communist dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu was toppled and has served three terms as president since 1990. He remains active in the Social Democracy Party, which he founded after the 1989 anti-communist revolt.
