NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania (AP) — Al-Qaida's North African branch has issued a new video that shows a Mauritanian officer who was recently captured by the terror group during a raid in the country's southeast.

The 1 minute, 11 second video was posted on a jihadist forum on Monday and was translated by the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors online activity from terrorist groups.

In the message, al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb says that their fighters captured the soldier after they attacked a police station in the town of Adel Bagrou. They appeal to Mauritanians and say that President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz exploits his people.

Aziz is a Western ally and has allowed French soldiers on Mauritanian soil to help in attacks against AQIM, which has bases in nearby Mali.
