BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi police say a member of a government-allied Sunni militia along with three of his sons have been killed in a pre-dawn attack south of Baghdad.

Police officials say that gunmen broke into the house of a member in the Sahwa, or Awakening Councils, early Wednesday and opened fire on the sleeping family, killing the four men and wounding the leader's wife.

The insurgent attack took place in Latifiyah, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Baghdad

A medic in a nearby hospital confirmed the death toll. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information to the media.

The Awakening Councils joined U.S. forces to fight al-Qaida in 2006 and helped turn the tide of the war.
