SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco's subway tunnels are closed after a driver went onto the underground tracks and traveled about a half-mile.
Muni spokesman Paul Rose says an SUV entered a tunnel on Church Street shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday and drove eastward almost to the Van Ness Station. The driver stopped when the vehicle got stuck in a narrow tunnel.
Rose told the San Francisco Chronicle ( ) that police arrested the driver. He says it's unclear why the driver entered the tunnel.
All underground train lines have been shut down while crews remove the vehicle and inspect the system. Shuttle bus service has been set up.
