NEW YORK (AP) — A developer and a builder are fighting to keep the public from seeing the details of their settlements with the families of six construction workers killed in a New York City crane collapse.
A Manhattan judge's order unsealing the settlements was set to take effect this past Tuesday. Days beforehand, the developer of the skyscraper where the crane was working appealed the ruling. The appeals court ordered the pacts be kept private while the appeal plays out.
A construction company involved in the project has filed papers saying it also plans to appeal the unsealing.
A lawyer for a woman whose townhouse was pulverized in the March 2008 collapse says the secrecy is keeping other plaintiffs in the dark about how much the companies might be able to pay.
