NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Police Department’s top spokesman has come under fire from community activists and others who say he botched the department’s explanation about a film critical of Muslims.

Paul Browne at first said the movie aired only a couple of times and used borrowed footage of his boss, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

He later backtracked. He said the film played on a loop for three months during NYPD counterterrorism training. He also said that on his advice, Kelly was interviewed for it.

It was another instance where Browne found himself at the center of some of the globe’s biggest stories.

Despite the flap over the movie, Browne was praised by Mayor Michael Bloomberg last week. And he says dealing with critics comes with the territory.
