NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are near their session lows at midday.
The Dow Jones industrial average is down 61 points at 12,592. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is down four points at 1,308, and the Nasdaq composite is down eight at 2,804.
Stocks started strong Tuesday. The Dow gained 66 points after it appeared Europe was closer to a solution for the Greek debt crisis. But a weak reading on U.S. consumer confidence sent the market lower.
The S&P is up 4.1 percent for January. That would tie its best start for the year since 1999.
