CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The trial of a former University of Virginia lacrosse player charged with killing his ex-girlfriend is entering its second week after testimony that portrayed the couple's relationship as volatile.
Prosecutors are scheduled to resume building their case Monday against George Huguely V, the Chevy Chase, Md., man accused in the May 2010 death of 22-year-old Yeardley Love of suburban Baltimore. She also was a lacrosse player at U.Va.
The 24-year-old defendant has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges related to the couple's final, violent encounter.
Prosecutor Dave Chapman has called witnesses who described Huguely as having a growing drinking problem and jealous of Love's involvement with a lacrosse player from North Carolina.
The defense has cast Love's death as an accident.
