BEIJING (AP) — China is tapping a career law-and-order official to run a Tibetan area at the center of self-immolations and protests against Chinese rule.
Liu Zuoming took up his post as Communist Party secretary of Sichuan province's Aba prefecture over the weekend. He told regional officials at the meeting that they must take a hard line against unrest.
Liu, who is 54, spent the past three decades working his way up the law enforcement bureaucracy in Sichuan and headed the province's justice bureau before his new appointment.
Aba saw some of the most violent protests in a rebellion against Chinese rule in 2008. Since then heavy security has been unable to prevent periodic protests and self-immolations by monks and nuns.
