Ohio Justice Rejects Death Penalty Law He Wrote

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio Supreme Court justice is in the unusual position of calling for the abolition of capital punishment — while still ruling on death penalty cases that come before him.

Justice Paul Pfeifer (PEYE'-fer) is trying to eliminate the very law he helped write as a state senator 30 years ago.

Pfeifer says he has concluded the death sentence doesn't make sense now that life with no possibility of parole is an option.

He's also complained for years that prosecutors have overused Ohio's law, which was originally meant for only the worst offenders.

Some county prosecutors say it's inappropriate for Pfeifer to advocate against capital punishment while on the bench.
