NEW DELHI (AP) — Ambulance sirens are screaming across New Delhi as the Indian capital holds a major disaster drill amid fears that a major earthquake could topple many buildings and homes.
Metro trains ground to a halt for more than a half-hour Wednesday while firefighters staged mock rescues and school children dived under desks for cover.
Dogs sniffed out people posing as survivors, and medics tended to fake wounds.
It was the biggest-ever earthquake drill across the city of 16.7 million people. Much of New Delhi is vulnerable to quake damage because of poorly constructed buildings, loosely hanging electrical wires and narrow alleys.
The city says a quake could cause moderate or significant damage to nine out of 10 buildings.
