QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Ecuador's highest court has upheld the criminal libel verdict favoring President Rafael Correa, including three-year prison terms for three executives and a columnist of the opposition newspaper El Universo and a total of $42 million in damages.
The defendants have called case a blatant attempt by Correa to bankrupt the paper.
Rights groups say it is part of a concerted campaign by Correa to stifle free speech and silence critics.
